Game of My Year 2024: Shapez

I don't play a lot of video games, but I do play the ones I'm into over and over again. This doesn't mean I'm good at them, rather I keep finding ways to be bad at them.

I got into one new game at the beginning of the year, and I've come back to it in recent weeks. It's called Shapez, and it's a fun factory game about building shapes!

a screenshot of the game Shapez. it shows the main hub, with a particular shape being requested, as well as several belts with various shapes and colors being transported on them.

You mine for shapes and colors, mix colors and paint shapes, and cut and stack shapes to form specific shapes that are requested by the game. It's a type of gameplay I find really fun.

I like the challenge of figuring out how to paint and stack to get the requested shape, it gives my brain something to puzzle over until I find a solution. Even if I try to make a certain shape and find out I'm not building it correctly, it's still fun because I get to keep puzzling over the shape.

After a certain point, where you unlock certain features, you can build a "make anything machine", which is also very fun because you have to figure out how to make the machine and wire it together so that it makes the shapes correctly.

This is the kind of game I really enjoy, just a one-player puzzler with creative elements.

I've gotten distracted twice by making shapes while trying to write this post, so I'm going to end it by saying that Shapez is available via Steam and it's currently on sale for just $0.99! Its normal price is $9.99, if you're reading this after the sale has ended. It's a fun little game and I highly recommed it for anybody who likes single player puzzle games.
